Application:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1.5 to 2 cups of water (ratio: 1 part rice to 1.5–2 parts water)
  • A pinch of salt (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon oil or butter (optional, for more flavor and loose grains)

Preparation steps:

  1. Wash rice:

    • Rinse the basmati rice thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. This will remove excess starch and prevent the rice from becoming sticky when cooking.
  2. Soak rice (optional):

    • You can soak the rice in cold water for 15-30 minutes. This shortens the cooking time and makes the rice even fluffier. Then pour off the soaking water.
  3. Cooking rice:

    • Place the washed rice in a saucepan with 1.5 to 2 cups of water (depending on the desired consistency), a pinch of salt and optionally a teaspoon of oil or butter.
    • Bring the water to a boil over medium heat.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer:

    • Once the water boils, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and let the rice simmer for about 15 minutes until the water is completely absorbed.
  5. Let it rest:

    • Turn off the heat and let the rice rest with the lid closed for about 5-10 minutes. This will make the rice nice and fluffy.
  6. Loosen rice and serve:

    • Carefully fluff the rice with a fork and serve warm.

Tips:

  • Rice cooker: Basmati rice is also perfect for cooking in a rice cooker. Use the same ratio of 1 part rice to 1.5 parts water.
  • Flavoring: For more flavor, you can add spices such as cardamom, cinnamon or bay leaves to the water.

Basmati rice goes well with curries, vegetable dishes or as a side dish to grilled meat or fish.
